DELL COMICS – WAGON TRAIN - 1960 ISSUE #6 Based on the TV show starring Ward Bond & Robert Horton.

To save the Wagon Train from starvation, Major Adams must find a cunning thief who is stealing all the food. There are no advertisements in this 10-cent comic book. Each page where you might expect an advertisement, including the back cover contains a short 1 page Wagon Train story.

CLASSIC ILLUSTRATED COMICS – THE BUCCANEER - 1959 ISSUE #148 The Buccaneer is based on the Cecil B. DeMille movie starring Yul Brynner, Charles Boyer, Charlton Heston & E. G. Marshall. At 15 cents these comics were typically a little more expensive than other comics as they featured stories by the World’s Greatest Authors. The back cover contains a list of 167 other Classic Illustrated comics available from Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde to Around the World in 80 days. To encourage young people to read more than just comics, Classic Illustrated Comics also included a 1 page story illustrated with only 1 picture such as “Sunken Treasure” which is included in this edition.

SOME NOSTALGIA Back in the 60s my allowance was 25 cents a week. Of that my parents made me save 10 cents and I was allowed to spend the remaining 15 cents however I wished. So I was usually off to Mitchell’s General Store in Painswick to buy a pop or a comic book and some penny candy. A bottle of pop cost 10 cents but there was a 2 cent deposit on the bottle so you could buy one for 8 cents if you drank it in the store and left the bottle behind. (You won’t find a variety store today that would encourage young children to hang out in the store while they drink their pop.) That left me with 7 cents for penny candy. My real passion however, was comic books which I started out buying for 10 cents each until the price went up to 12 cents. Except for the classics that cost 15 cents and required my entire weekly disposable income. But even the 12 cent comic books left me with a little extra for some candy. I just had to be a little more discriminating about my choices. Somehow, I think that was the lesson my parents were trying to teach me. What would 3 cents buy me in candy in the 1960s? Well I could get 3 black balls for a penny and a licorice cigar or pipe for 2 cents. Or for 1 penny I could get a piece of Double Bubble Gum, which included a bonus of a mini-comic inside the wrapper and still have enough for a small pack of Popeye candy smokes. (The "cigar" word with "ettes" on the end is not permitted on Kijiji.)
